Dhanteras 2024: A Festival of Wealth and Well-Being

  • Dhanteras :Introduction

  Dhanteras also known as Dhantrayodashi marks the beginning   of five days long Diwali festivals. On the day of Dhantrayodashi,   Goddess Lakshmi came out of the ocean during the churning of   the Milky Sea. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi, along with Lord Kuber   who is the God of wealth, is worshipped on the auspicious day of   Trayodashi. The day of Dhanteras is also observed as   Dhanwantri  Triodasi or Dhanvantri Jayanti, the birth   anniversary of the God of Ayurveda. Yamadeep is another ritual   on the same Trayodashi Tithi when the lamp for the God of death   is lit outside home to ward off any untimely death of any family   members

  • Significance of Dhanteras:

This day  is dedicated to the pooja of Lord Dhanvantari, the God of Ayurveda, and Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity

  •  Historical Background and Rituals:

As with Danteras there are many stories associated but mainly story of Lord Danvantri and story of young King Hima’ son

Story of God Danvantri:

As per Hindu philosophy story of Lord Dhanvantari is stated as during the churning of the Milky Sea (Samudra Manthan), a quest undertaken by the gods and demons to obtain the  nectar of immortality ,During this churning, several divine gifts emerged, including the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, and Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods. Lord Dhanvantari emerged holding a pot filled with this precious nectar, as well as the Ayurvedic knowledge of healing. As the God of Medicine, Dhanvantari symbolizes health and wellness, making Dhanteras not just a celebration of wealth but also of good health.

 

Story Of Hima King’ Son:

King Hima’s sixteen-year-old son, who was fated to die from a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. Still, his  newlywed wife didn’t let him sleep the day of their wedding. At the entrance to their room she placed all of her gold and silver jewelry and lit a plethora of lamps.
Afterwards, she kept him awake all night long by exciting him with stories and songs. When the God of Death, Yama, arrived in the form of a serpent, he was blinded by the glare of the jewellery and the lamps. Unable to enter, Yama returned, and the life of young prince was spared
